      托福阅读中词汇题主要考察词汇的认知与推断,可直接解题:

      a.对于认识词汇,直接解题,沾边就对,要注意两者一定层面上的共性,如extract=remove,都表示空间的位移,另外要注意熟词多义,如article当物品讲,significant做suggestive等。

      b.对于不认识词汇,可采用如下方式:

      (a)词根词缀法或合成词

      (b)上下语境,可采取因果,对比和解释 (注意各信号词)

      解释关系可用定义,同位语,标点符号,例子和定语从句来表示

对比信号词:however, but, instead of, although, while, whereas, unlike, different等

因果信号词:due to; lead to; because; so; as a result等

      (2)代入验证

      (3)(3)猜(ETS规律:题目简单选项最难的为正解,反之亦然)

      Example:

      1. As Philadelphia grew from a small town into a city in the first half of the eighteenth century, it became an increasingly important marketing center for a vast and growing agricultural hinterland.

The word hinterland in the passage is closet in meaning to

      (A) tradition (B)association

      (C)produce (D)region

      分析:hinterland此词中含有land,表明此单词跟地点相关,根据此点可排除(a)传统,(b)组织,机构, (c)农产品

2.Other faults are small and produce only minor and infrequent earthquakes. However, the vast majority of faults are inactive and do not generate earthquakes at all. Nevertheless, even faults that have been inactive for years can rupture again if the stresses acting on the region increase sufficiently.

The word rupture in the passage is closet in meaning to

      (A) oscillate (B) break (C) vanish (D) mature

      分析:我们皆知bankrupt为破产,可知词缀rupt为裂口,裂缝,根据此意,排除(a)波动,(c)消失,(d)成熟

      3. Carson argued that the regulations governing use of these chemicals were inadequate, though her positions were not as extreme as they are sometimes now represented. She did not support the complete banning of pesticides. Rather, she was opposed to indiscriminate use, i.e. use without any consideration for caution and moderation.

The word indiscriminate in the passage is closet in meaning to

      (A) inefficient (B) sponsored (C) uncontrolled (D) irrational

      分析: i.e.用来解释前句中indiscriminate的含义,体现出毫无节制的使用。根据此含义可排除(a)无效的 (b)发起的,主办的 (d)不合理的

      4. A mysterious decimation of bee populations has German beekeepers worried, while a similar phenomenon in the United States is gradually assuming catastrophic proportions. The consequences for agriculture and the economy could be enormous. No one knows what is causing the bees to perish, but some experts believe that the large-scale use of genetically modified plants in the US coul be a factor.

The word decimation in the passage is closet in meaning to

      (A) deciding (B) perishing (C) exploding (D) animating

      分析:分析此句,我们可看到similar说明decimation of bees在美国也存在,由后catastrophic(灾难性的)可知该词为负,由末句perish可知答案。

      5. By about 3100 B.C, they were apparently subjugated in southern Mesopotamia by Summerians, whose name became synonymous with the region immediately north of the Persian Gulf, in the fertile lower valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates.

The word subjugated in the passage is closet in meaning to

      (A)concentrated (B)conquered

      (C)segregated (D)distinguished

分析:根据解释关系,即由whose引导的定语从句来确定含义,在该句中name became synonymous with the region是关键,即名字成为一个地方地方的代名词,只能说明该地被占领,由此可选(b)

      6. In spite of its simplicity, the national flag as we know today is in no way a primitive artifact. It is, rather, the result of millennia of development in many corners of the globe.

The word primitive in the passage is closet in meaning to

      (A) classical (B) ancient (C) unsophisticated (D) identifiable

      分析:in spite of 为明显的对比关系词, 连接前后相反含义,即(+)(-)或(-)(+). 由前simplicity可知后半句为复杂。但in no way为否定副词,所以primitive应该为unsophisticated.

      7. Hunting is at best a precarious way of procuring food, even when the diet is supplemented with seeds and fruits.

The word precarious in the passage is closet in meaning to

      (A)uncertain (B)humble

      (C)worthy (D)unusual

      分析:注意even的用法,even+词表递进,even+句子表转折。从语义层面可知水果和种子为补充来源,后句为正,前句应为负。由at best(最多,充其量)来从负面说明hunting是获得主食的第一选择,是不稳定的方式。

8.In time the increasing complexity of Neolithic societies led to the development of writing, prompted by the need to keep records and later by the urge to chronicle experiences, learning and beliefs.

The word chronicle in the passage is closet in meaning to

      (A)repeat (B)understand

      (C)exchange (D)describe

      分析:首先应分析该句句子结构,A led to B, prompted by C and by D. 在此句中,led to, prompted by为因果信号词,表明新石器社会的高度负责性,记录的需要和记录情感,经验的需求共同促进了写作的发展。可见chronicle应与writing有关,根据选项选择(d)
